Contemporary Dance Showcase

This project involved filming four choregraphed pieces for Camp Preville's Contemporary Dance School. These videos were requested by their director to promote the work of their choreographers and students.

Objective

To film and edit an artistic video that best represents each choregraphed pieces dance style.

Process

Since this was a one day shoot, the best way for me to get as much coverage as possible was to start off the day by seeing all four dances once before filming. Once each group did one practice try, I communicated with each choreographer and confirmed which shots I would aim to highlight and whether there were any parts of the dance that I should focus on.

Challenges

The main challenge in this project was knowing who to focus on and when. Since I wasn't familiar with the dancers or the choreographers, I had to get each group to do the dance 3-4 times to ensure I got enough coverage of every dancer. Thankfully, I was told that the dancers could be instructed to do the piece as many times as needed. Although this was helpful, I got enough coverage by take 3. Within the editing stage, the challenge came through matching different takes together and making sure the musical queues stayed consistent.

Outcome

The videos turned out beautifully and quite dynamic for someone who isn't too familiar with filming choreography. The students and choreographers were quite happy with the end result and only requested for a more dynamic was to display the school's name and choreographers.
